The mission of the Institute of Medicine in India is “to advance the knowledge and research of the health sciences.” It is an independent organization of international reputation. The Institute of Medicine was set up in December 1963 by a joint commission, which included both the government of India and the medical organizations of several countries. At its present location in New Delhi, it has become one of the most distinguished medical research institutes in the world. The six aims of the institute are to develop accurate and reliable methods of diagnosis and treatment, contribute through research to the betterment of health, improve the infrastructure of the health care system, provide basic and clinical training in the fields of surgery, pharmacy and other health services, and disseminate information on health care systems and practice.
The IML maintains departments dealing with general diseases, psychology, pediatrics, nursing, public health, and allied health. General practitioners (GP), registered nurses (RNs) and physicians (GP, RNs) with a master’s degree are trained on the approved principles of the IML. They also obtain specialized training from IML accredited research branches. Specialized courses, seminars, and workshops are conducted yearly to impart knowledge on the latest in technology and new concepts. Seminars and workshops are conducted to train the staff in the delivery of services. Seminars address the current problems and issues affecting the Indian health system and prepare them for services against specific diseases.
Services Of The Institute
The services of the institute are also extended to foreigners coming to India for consultation. This helps foreign professionals to develop contacts and experience with the people and the institutions of their own country. In addition, the services of the institute are extended to students studying at the universities and colleges of India.
The IML has two international offices. One is located in New Delhi and is headed by a senior physician. The other is in Hyderabad, India. The latter provides additional assistance to the Hyderabad branch. The Hyderabad branch also provides additional assistance to the other wings of the institute.

Its focus is on promoting community and societal welfare, while ensuring basic and maximum health. It strives to preserve and develop physical, mental and social welfare of the people.
The primary aim of the institute is to promote general public health. It does this through its affiliation with various voluntary and public organizations working towards achieving well being. It’s other aims are to improve the standards of health education and preventive health care for all. Finally, it aims at providing systems of universal health care and community health promotion. In its effort to achieve these goals, the institute has developed various strategic plans.
